Two of the widely sold Modern Swiss Gold Francs are the “Helvectica” and the “Vreneli” 20 franc gold coins. The “Helvecticas” Gold 20 Franc coin was first minted by Switzerland in 1883. These gold coins were then struck regularly from 1886 to 1896. They are 21 millimeter diameter gold coins made with 90.0% fine gold. The actual gold content is 0.1867 troy ounces (5.81 grams). The obverse has a lady's head facing left. Along the left rim of the coin is "CONFEDERATIO" and the right rim has "HELVETICA".
The reverse has the Swiss cross centered on a shield in the middle of the coin. On the left of the shield is "20" and on the right is "FR" for the denomination. Above the shield is a five pointed star and underneath the shield is the date. These are all encircled by a wreath.

The 20 gold Franc was redesigned in 1897 by Fritz Ulysse Landry. His design won the national contest to redesign the gold franc coin that year. Landry's design is called the Vreneli after the 3rd century Saint Verena of Egypt who settled in Switzerland. Verena had escaped the Swiss who had martyred the Theban Legion. The Theban Legion were 6,666 men who converted in mass. They are also know as the Martyrs of Agaunum. Aqaunum is where the Theban Legion refused to bow before the local Swiss ruler. This Swiss town is now named after two of the saints martyred there, Saint Maurice-en-Valais. Verena lived as a hermit in the lands of Switzerland outside of Solothum and later in a cave near Zurich. She is attributed with many Swiss converting to Christianity.
The bust portrait of Vreneli is facing left on the obverse with mountains in the back ground. Arching over her head, along the coins rim, and in the field above the mountains is “HELVETIA”. Helvetia is the ancient Roman name for the Celtic (Gaul) tribe that inhabited the large plateaued portion in the west of today's Switzerland.
The reverse has a shield in center with the Swiss cross on it. Directly under the shield along the rim is the date. The mint mark, “B” for Bern is along the rim just right of the date. Some coins have a “L” along the rim indicating the coin as being minted as “lingot” (bullion). The denomination is along the central horizontal axis by the rim on either side of the coin; “20” is on the left and “FR” is on the right. Behind and around the rest of the coin’s reverse are oak branches and flowing ribbons.
These are 21.6 millimeters (7/8 inches) in diameter and weigh 6.4516 grams (0.2074 troy ounces). These coins have a fineness of 90% (21.6 carat) gold content. Each 20 Franc coin contains 0.1867 troy ounces (5.81 grams) of gold. The Vreneli gold coins were last minted in 1949. An interesting note is about 29 known 1879 pieces which were struck from the bright gold of Valaisa from Gondo, which is an old Roman mine. These can be distinguished by a small cross punched on the reverse at the center of the cross on the shield.
There is also the gold 10 franc “Helvetia”. These were minted in 1911 to 1922. The obverse is the same however the reverse has been altered. The denomination still runs, split, across the center, “10” on the left and “FR” on the right. However the bottom is adorned with a branch of flowering edelweiss. The date is above this just below the coins center, and the mint mark “B” for Bern is centered at the very bottom. Ten above is the Swizz Cross amongst solar rays. These have a diameter of 18.5 millimeters and weigh 3.2258 grams. They're also 90.0% gold with an actual gold content of 0.0934 troy ounce (2.90 grams).
In 1925 the Swiss Mint in Bern also released a 100 franc gold coin with almost the exact design as the 10 franc coin except for the “100” instead of the “10”. The 100 franc gold coin has a diameter of 34 millimeters and weighs 32.25 grams with a 90.0% fineness and has a total gold content of 0.9334 troy ounces (29 grams).
