The Austrian Mint’s “999,9” Gold Philharmonic was first struck in 1989. It is the ‘finest’ gold: .9999 pure gold, 99.99% gold bullion, or 24 karat gold.  The Gold Philharmonic is the only European gold legal tender outside of small commemorative gold bullion.  In 1992, 1995, and again in 1996 the World Gold Council announced the Gold Philharmonic as the best selling gold coin.  Most investment strategists recommend a 2% to 5% holdings of a precious metal.  Gold is a great choice and the Gold Philharmonic is an excellent product.

The Austrian Mint in Vienna has a very long tradition.  In 1192 Duke of Austria Leopold V captured King Richard I of England near Vienna. It was founded with part of the ransom of 150,000 marks (65,000 pounds of silver), paid over a year later in 1194.

The Austrian Mint has minted a wide variety of coins over the centuries since.  However, the first and only gold currency of Austria was the Krone (Crown) first struck in 1892 until 1924.  The gold coins that were minted prior to 1892 were “trade coins” and used for international bullion coins.  Many of these had two denominations marked on them.  For instance in 1870 to 1892 Austria minted a 90% gold 8 florin/20 francs.  The Krone is now available new as restrikes and so are other restrikes of other gold coins from this era.
