The American Gold Eagle Bullion Coin was first struck by the United States' Mint in 1986.  These 22 karat gold coins are minted in four sizes.  Their purity of 91.67% gold is the fineness of the United States’ original gold coins, with 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.  Gold is a very ‘soft’ metal and 22 karat gold shows nicks and scratches less readily than 24 karat does.  The use of silver, another ‘soft’ metal, with the ‘hard’ copper offsets the reddening effect on the gold’s color that copper causes.  The fineness and metal content is guaranteed the United States government and it is the most popular gold bullion coin in the United States.  These are legal tender however the intrinsic gold content value far exceeds there denominational worth.  Proof strikes were introduced only with the 1 ozt initially, then the fractional were added and all have been available as Proof since 1988.  Uncirculated gold bullion coins were offered in 2009.  However during 2009 demand was so high that the special strikes were not available.

In the late 1970’s, after the formation of OPEC and the beginning of heightened oil prices, US government officials started looking towards the nation’s precious metals reserves as an answer to the country’s rising budget deficit. However it was not until December 17, 1985 that President Ronald Reagan signed the Bullion Act into law.  Earlier that year, due to South Africa’s racial policies, he was under great public pressure to change our trading relationship with South Africa and he had signed legislation that prohibitive the sale of South African gold Krugerrand.  The Krugerrand was first produced in 1967 and became the dominate gold bullion coin on the world market place.  Canada had started their Canadian Gold Maple Leaf in 1979 and Australia had its Australian Nugget beginning in 1981.  Later Great Britain would introduce its Britannia coin in 1986.  The US Bullion Act of 1985 stipulated that the gold used for the American Gold Eagle bullion coins has to come from the United States.

The obverse has the famous double eagle design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ which was minted in 1907 through 1933.  The outer edge of the coin is ringed with small stars except at the lower right were oak branches rest on a rock.  Liberty is standing, facing forward, with one foot on this rock.  She is wearing a flowing robe with flowing hair.  She holds a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.  There are rays radiating from the lower portion of the coin behind her.  The date is on the lower left.  Those coins struck from 1986 through 1991 have Roman numeral dates and those in 1992 and on have Arabic numbers for their dates.

The reverse of the American Gold Eagle was designed by American sculptor Miley Tucker-Frost.  The design is based on the sculpture she made for Ronald Reagan’s first inauguration in 1981 named after his quote that inspired her; “Together a new beginning.”  The along the upper portion of the rim is “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the lower portion has the “(weight) FINE GOLD- (amount) DOLLARS”.  Along the center on the left in is “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and across on the right is “IN GOD WE TRUST”.  A bald eagle is landing with an olive branch in its talons and in the nest is another bald eagle with an eaglet.
