The American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin is the United States' first 24 karat gold (99.99%) bullion coin. The US started striking these on June 22, 2006 and were released the same year on July 13. The American Gold Buffalo are based on the Type I Buffalo or Indian Head nickels James Earle Fraser origin of 1913.
The obverse has the portrait of a mature male Native American Indian bust profile facing right. On his shoulder is the date and “LIBERTY” along upper right rim arching from his forehead to bridge of his nose.
On the reverse has the profile of an American Bison facing left standing on a patch of land. Directly under the bison’s front hoofs is “$50” with “1OZ .9999 FINE GOLD” running along the rim. Under the bison’s chin is the motto “IN GOD” stacked over “WE TRUST”. Arching over the bison along the upper rim is “UNITED.STATES.OF.AMERICA” and in the small field on the upper right above the bison’s back and the legend is stacked “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.

The Presidential Coin Act of 2005 not only created a new series of one dollar coins depicting each one of the United States Presidents but also aurthorized the redesign of the one cent penny and it also gave authority to the United States Treasury to mint the US’ first 24 carat gold coin. The original gold coins issued by the US Mint were 22 carat gold, 91.67% fine gold, starting in 1795. Later, in 1834, the gold content was reduced to 90% fine gold. The current American Gold Eagle bullion coins are of the 22 carat gold. The world wide popularity of 24 carat gold bullion was the deciding factor of attaching the creation of the United States’ first 24 carat gold, 99.99% pure, bullion coin.
The Gold American Buffalo’s designer, James Earle Frasere, was a student of the famous sculpture Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Saint-Gaudens’ was the designer of the 1907 double eagle which goes by his name. The buffalo depicted is based on the silhouette of the very popular American Bison, “Black Diamond”, who was living in the New York Zoological Gardens in the early 1900s. This reverse design was also used on the Smithsonian’s commemorative coin of 2001.
These 99.99% pure gold coins are one troy ounce, 31.1035 grams, 1.287 inches, 32.70 millimeters, in diameter, and 0.116 inches, 2.95 millimeters thick with a reeded edge. These American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins are about the same size as a US half dollar. The one troy ounce size is the only size available for the US 24 carat gold coins however one half troy ounce coins were included in the “Double Prosperity” set of 8/9/08. One quarter and one tenth of a troy ounces bullion gold coins were also added in 2008. These coins have the denominational markings of “$25”, “$10”, and “$5” respectively.
These coins are available in Mint State and Proof State coins. All of these are struck at the US Mint’s branch at West Point. Only the Proof coins have the “W” mint mark behind the neck of the Indian on the obverse. The first Proof coins were sold by the US Mint for $800 dollars in 2006. The soaring gold prices pushed the price from the 2007 price just under $900 to over $1,400 in 2009 and over $2,000 in 2011. WARNING: there are many non-US Mint bullion which are very similar however there are usually variations in the inscriptions. Some of these are only gold clad so if a price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
